这一理论崩塌导致137项已发表研究失效，并引发悲剧性后果：罗尔德·韦斯特博士2018年发表于《自然》的里程碑论文（doi：10.1038s41586-018-0665-2）因此被撤回后，其本人于卡文迪许实验室顶楼跳楼自杀。
